Moscow, here we come!

1am on a Friday, my alarm’s radio goes off, first word: “terrorism”, first reaction: doh! Anyway, that all doesn’t matter now, because after an very lazy day of waking up at 10am, sleeping at 6pm, waking up again at 10pm only to go back to bed at 11:30pm, and wake up again at erm, now… two months of dreaming and planning is about to become true!

After a quick shower, a shave and the final running around the house looking for things that I might have missed out, I will make my way to the Cambridge bus station and catch the 3:15am bus to Heathrow! With three hours free to stroll around in the duty free (proper duty free prices btw) and a whole guidebook with common phrases to learn in three languages, it’s holiday fever all over again! :D :D

1:12am, ahhh, showerrrrrrrrr… :)

Heathrow Airport:
After taking the national express - well actually we all called it smelly express after the poo storage of the bus apparently started leaking from a previous journey - we arrived on time at Heathrow. Hordes of people were roaming all over the place, this all at 4 in the morning. I was always worried about the new luggage restrictions that were place, but proceeded calmly thinking that everything would be fine. Eventually, when I did get the chance to check in my big suitcase (22.7kg, just 300 grams off the limit ;P) I proceeded to pass through the first line of security. A lady working there asked me to place my backpack through the metal frames specially built to determine if my luggage size was ok… thankfully it was, but I was also carrying a nylon bag that contained some ceramic decorative plates that were very fragile. She said that I wouldn’t be allowed through if I have 2 pieces of hang luggage items (its ok if you have the duty free ones after purchasing something!!!!) She asked me to try and fit the plates inside my backpack, but I wasn’t prepared to do that knowing well that the broken plates wouldn’t make a good present… to cut a long story short, all the way back to check in was the faith for me! doh!

Anyway, after that “nice” morning start, the worse bit was over… Walked around the duty free shops, but didn’t fancy the hassle of carrying anything more… I went to the departure’s lounge and waited only to find out that my flight was getting delayed by 45 minutes. No matter, we’re on holidays :)

In the plane, everything went smooth. After breakfast, I got chatting with this Russian lady called Tatiana that was on a business trip in London. She was a very nice lady, and offered to help me complete the visa/customs registration card that was solely in Russian. The pilot did try and tell us what each field in the form was for, but we didn’t have more than a second to fill it before he jumped to the next one! Got it sorted in the end though. Moscow was just around the corner, and I learned that Tatiana actually studied in Cambridge (we’re I live)… what a small world, we exchanged email address and say our farewells.

Moscow:
Wow, the airport was actually amazing, well nice and clean. Had to wait quite some time for my luggage but at least it was there! Bought a bottle of water, my first ever word in Russia in Russian was said there :D Priviet (Hi!) it was just in case you were wondering!

Met a guy called Dima, that was there to transfer me to the hotel I was staying at (Hotel Zarya). Although he couldn’t speak many words in English, or Greek for that matter :) We did manage to communicate all the way there. It took us around 3-4 hours to get to our hotel, the traffic was horrid! We drove pass St. Basil’s Cathedral and I was amazed that I was actually in Russia!! Good stuff! I also was equally happy that I didn’t have to do the driving, since these Muscovites were crazy! Seriously, I’m Greek, and I know were bad, but this was something out of this world! Cars starting from the inside line (slow lane) and then just going diagonal to the fast one, accelerating in between! Then some dodgy looking Mercs just zooming right pass them… honestly, mayhem!

When we did get to the hotel, I took a quick shower and ate something in the restaurant. It didn’t take long for me to go smack; asleep! At least until 7 next morning!
